A "How To" Guide for the WCT Reader

How Do I Return to Earlier Work?

How do I return to a page that I was at a minute ago?
At the top left corner of every page there is a tool bar with six icons:
  1. Red X = exit the program;
  2. Yellow house = clear current search and return to Home page (the list of current options);
  3. Back arrow = return to previous page;
  4. Forward arrow = (when you have gone back) go forward to the next screen again;
  5. Printer = print the current page; and
  6. Question mark = go to the first page of the "How To" Guide.
The back arrow and forward arrow each work only when they are turquoise.
How far back can I go using the back arrow?

All the way back to the beginning of this session in the program. Just press the turquoise back arrow again ... and again ... and again. (But all bets are off if you try to go back more than 500 pages!)

You may notice that, if links are offered to places on the Internet, you can go out on the Internet from within the WCT Reader. If an Internet page in turn presents other links, you can move to those as well. However, the back and forward arrows are intended only to track your movement within a searchable index; they do not move you around the whole Internet. So if you are out on the Internet and want to come back, click on the Home icon (the yellow house) on the tool bar. You can also, no matter where you are, click on the question mark which will take you into the "How To" Guide on your computer.

How do I return to pages viewed in an earlier session?

The History button on the Home page takes you to earlier work. NOTE: If you have set your preference (on the Preferences page) to accumulate history, AND if you have hundreds of pages of past work, there will be a delay when you press the History button, because the program has to review all the pages and sort them by date and time.

The history page looks like Screen 1:

Each date and time is a link to display summaries of ten pages from earlier session. Screen 2 is what you would get by clicking on one of the links above:

The ten pages listed are usually search result summaries or individual pages of the target text. In order to reduce clutter, instances of the Home page, the Preferences page, and any others which did not directly show something informative, have been eliminated.

To show a particular item of past work, click on the Show ## button directly under it. For example, clicking on Show 93 in the illustration above yields Screen 3:

Normally, you can resume your work from any page that is called up through a history summary. The one exception is if the underlying "WCT Index" has been removed or put somewhere else on your computer.

Back in Screen 2, the Save button lets you give a name, so that a page is not removed during a general deletion of history. The Delete button causes that one page to be removed.

How do I delete all the history pages?

In Screen 1 above, there is a Delete All button.

How do turn the history option off or on?

That's one of the options on the Preferences page. Click the Preferences button either on the Home page or at the bottom of many search result pages. Then scroll down to the History off / on selection.
