A "How To" Guide for the WCT Reader

How Do I Install Downloaded Ebooks?

Where can I get ebooks?
Thought you would never ask! There are three ways:
  1. A monthly sampler is featured for free download at WordsCloseTogether.com. It typically includes a "bookshelf" collection of one author's ebooks, a separate single ebook from another author, one or more documents, etc.
  2. You may choose from among over 14,000 individual ebooks for download, up to 10 at a time, at WCTSE.com -- for free, sort of (you are invited to toss in a couple of dollars for the search, but it is not required).
  3. If you are a big spender ($29), there is the option of ordering a DVD with all 14,000+ books on it.
The above are all available now. If you are patient and you are comfortable working with massive downloads and with software that is needed to resolve DVD "images", there is a possibility that the entire 14,000 books in the future may be offered as a single download at another site, to be announced.

The focus in the rest of this page is on the second option above.
How do I select ebooks at the WCTSE site?

The Words Close Together download site offers a conventional shopping cart. Across the top of each page the letters A through Z are clickable links, each to a page listing all authors whose last name starts with that letter. After each author there are one or more titles. There is a checkbox in front of each title. Browse, and place a checkmark in front of each book that you would like to have on your computer.

The first time you place a checkmark in front of a book, you will be asked either to log in as a past visitor, or to register as a new visitor. The only information requested is your email address, the state where you reside, and a password of your choosing. This enables you to view previous orders, and to repeat a download if you wish. Privacy note: The information is for internal use only, and is not given to anyone, other than under a direct court order.

After browsing and selecting, you wind up with a shopping cart, which might look something like Screen 1:

The books themselves are free under the Project Gutenberg license. You are invited to make a voluntary payment for whatever the search capability is worth to you. You may edit the voluntary payment amount directly. Simply highlight the amount that is there, then type in whatever amount you wish -- 20.00 or 1000000.00 (we wish!!!) or 0.00 (if the ability to search in these books is of no value to you). Please avoid amounts between one cent and 99 cents -- they serve only to enrich PayPal.

If there is a Voluntary Payment amount other than 0.00, when you click on Check Out, you are taken through a sequence of PayPal screens. Note that you do not need to be a member or prior user of PayPal. All you need is your normal credit card. Any information that you give to PayPal in this transaction is strictly between PayPal and you; we learn nothing except the amount of the Voluntary Payment (for which we thank you!)

Then you are shown Screen 2 with a list of your selections and two buttons near the bottom:
How do I download the pack?
Click on the Download as Zip button in Screen 2 above if you already have the latest version of the WCT Reader. There is a delay as the shopping cart system makes up a custom package of the ebooks you have selected. The length of the delay depends on the size and number of the ebooks that you have selected. The delay is somewhat longer if you click on the Download as Zip with Reader button. Do this if you want the latest version of the WCT Reader pack included.

Note that the ebooks are useless to you unless you have a current copy of the WCT Reader on your personal computer.

After you click one or the other Download button, you are shown either Screen 3 -A ...
OR if you have the WinZip program on your computer, Screen 3-B:
In either case, you may select one of the radio buttons, either Save to Disk or Open with ..., then click the Okay button. If you choose to "save to disk" the download pack, you are shown Screen 4:
Decide where you wish to put the ebooks.
You can put these ebooks wherever you wish on your computer. If you plan on under 100 ebooks altogether, you will find it convenient to put them all together in one directory or subdirectory. If you plan to accumulate many ebooks, you might consider the arrangement that is used at the WCTSE.com site -- Ebooks as the top directory, the letters of the alphabet as the next level (first letter of the authors' last names), then a subdirectory for each author.
How do I extract the ebooks from the pack?
At this point, select Open. Either an "Extraction Wizard" or the WinZip program will ask for a location in which you wish to place the content of the download. Here are the dialog boxes for the "Extraction Wizard" ... Screen 5 ...
Click Next to go on to the location selection in Screen 6:
Use the Browse button to open up a standard dialog. Select the directory / subdirectory in which you have decided to place the ebooks (and the WCT Reader.MSI pack if included). Click Next and Finish buttons as necessary.
What if I included the program with the books?
If you elected to include the WCT Reader.MSI pack in the download, you have one further step, discussed earlier, to install the Reader program. Click on the Windows operating system Start button. (We all know where that is. Start is where we go in Windows to Stop. Sigh!!) Select in Windows XP "My Computer" or in Windows Vista "Computer", and browse to the location you selected for the download. Screen 7 is the XP version:
Double click on the WCTReader.msi line or icon. The rest is exactly as described after Screen 3 in the installation steps for the Reader.
Some recommended clean-up:
  • If your browser is still open at the download site, click on Log Out.
  • If there are download images showing on your desktop screen that you no longer want, right click on them one at a time, and select Delete.
