Snapshot of 22 years of history

1984-1985: Marpex Inc. developed its first search engine FindIt for a Canadian firm, Reteaco Inc. Its release was just in time for the new CD-ROM technology announced by Sony and Philips. This technology was applied commercially to everything from real estate to submarine manuals to telephone books and bibles.

Summer 2001: Project GG was started in response to the frustrations experienced by students at Franciscan University with online search engines. The project has since been renamed Words Close Together.

Late 2002: Phase 1 Development of prototype Level One search was completed.

Spring 2003: Phase 2 Demonstration site at CatholicFind was made public.

March 2004: Phase 3 U.S. Patent application was submitted.

January 2005: Phase 4 Shifted to full time development (previously full time teaching and part time development). The prototype for Level Two search was completed August 2005.

June 2, 2006: Phase 5 Completion and alpha release of commercial version of the Level One desktop search. Phase 5 included extensive development of text extraction and data preparation tools.

August 1, 2006: Release of Level One search (desktop and Internet versions), initial offering of products and services.

October, 2006: Published (Re)Search 101, revised in December 2007 to a discussion of "Research Quality" search engines.

December, 2006: Substantially upgraded the CatholicFind web site.

August, 2007: Released Internet based search of 14,000 Project Gutenberg books.

December, 2007: Released desktop based search (DVDs and downloads) of 14,000 Project Gutenberg books.

The current focus

Complete and release levels two, three, and four so that massive quantities of text may be searched using the same WordsCloseTogether techniques.
